Preparing for the NIST Cryptographic Transition:
Important Deadlines for FIPS 140-2 and 140-3
Dear Valued Customers and Team Members,
Effective September 21, 2026, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will transition FIPS 140-2 cryptographic validations to its historical list, designating FIPS 140-3 as the active standard. In alignment with this change, Advantor Systems is adjusting our product portfolio to reflect this transition while ensuring continuity for your existing security environments.
What Is Changing and Why
NIST’s decision to move FIPS 140-2 to historical status marks a significant shift in federal cryptographic standards. FIPS 140-3, the updated and more rigorous standard, will become the required benchmark for all new cryptographic module validations. This affects how federal and DoD facility managers procure, deploy, and plan for electronic security products going forward.
Key Dates
Now through September 21, 2026
FIPS 140-2 products remain available for procurement for both new and existing installations. This window represents your last opportunity to procure FIPS 140-2 validated products for new deployments.
Effective September 22, 2026
FIPS 140-2 products will be available for existing installations only. New deployments and system expansions will be required to align with FIPS 140-3.
What This Means for You
- Replacement Purchases: Effective September 22, 2026, FIPS 140-2 products will be permitted for procurement solely to maintain or replace existing deployments.
- New Deployments: Effective September 22, 2026, FIPS 140-2 products will not be permitted for procurement for new installations or expansion of your security environment unless granted an exception from your Contracting Officer.
- Existing Environments: Current deployments using FIPS 140-2 are not impacted immediately and may continue to operate in accordance with your security environment and compliance requirements.

Recommended Next Steps
To ensure a smooth and compliant transition, Advantor recommends the following actions:
- Assess your system lifecycle and refresh planning, including opportunities for advanced purchases to support a smooth transition before the September 21, 2026 deadline.
- Review upcoming projects and procurement timelines to align with FIPS 140-3 requirements for new deployments.
Taking action now — rather than waiting for the deadline — will allow your team adequate time to plan procurements, obtain necessary approvals, and avoid disruption to ongoing security operations.
